Al Alamein

Rising and falling dunes march along the road to El Alamein, the nearest spot the German forces reached in their drive for the strategic crossroads of Alexandria, Tobruk, and the Nile during World War II.The allies won the crucial battle against General Erwin Rommel here, turning the tide of war in North Africa which cost thousands and thousands of lives on both sides, Rommel proved to be one of the most able field commanders in military history. He led his army, known for lighting advances, from a major defeat at Tobruk to almost total victory at the gates of Alexandria. In the final conflict, tank battles at ranges of only 20 to 30 yards were reported, ships fought for control of supply routes on the sea, new anti-tank guns were used and bombers killed large numbers, disabling many tanks. The museum displays examples of weaponry including tanks, charts of troop movements and models of war leaders planning the campaign.
